More than words: graphic design as a communication tool
Humans are visual beings, as we process visual information faster and more effectively than other types of information.
One of the reasons why it is advisable to make the most of a timely use of desing trends is they allow us to start up-to-the-minute compared to the rest of the other brands and competitors.
However, this does not mean that we put design trends aside for the rest of the year. It is important to keep the list close when planning to make sure we are indeed constantly updating and making changes if necessary.
This 2020, the design trends continue in line with what we saw during 2019, but there are some details we should be paying attention to:
1. Simple typefaces. This year, the challenge is to implement simple font styles (sans-serif) to reinforce your brand’s personality. Bold types, which include three-dimensional effects, were in vogue in the past few months and are still widely used. Say goodbye to flat designs! On the other hand, you have surely noticed a boom in typographic animations. It is very easy to fall into excesses when it comes to a trend, so always take in to account that less is more.
2. Realistic textures. We have been transitioning to 3D for a while, so it is not uncommon to think that design trends for social networks are moving towards digital realism. In case you haven't noticed, there are a good amount of 3D textures that look almost real: velvet, hardness and cavities, and virtualy everything that makes us want to touch what we see on the screen.
3. 3D, 3D, 3D. Did you notice that the previous two trends are related to 3D? If a few years back we ditched hyper-realistic design to make way for two-dimensional illustrations, this 2020 we are walking a path towards the third dimension. Note: this does not mean we are going back to hyperrealism, but that using perspectives and different spatial planes is essential for design nowadays.
4. Micro videos. In previous posts we talked about the coolest kid in town: Tik Tok. So it is not surprising to think that our digital life is increasingly filled with animations and short videos. Gifs were the just the begining: in 2020 animations are already being used to attract the attention of audiences in advertising, corporate image and content on social networks.
5. Data visualization. Although the expansion of infographics has not come to an end yet, for several months the way data information is represented on social networks has been changing. We left behind the classic pie and column charts to move on to complex, three-dimensional figures that make it possible to convey information that might be more complex in ways that are even easier to understand or, at least, more attractive.
6. Multimedia portraits. Nowadays we are really interested in showing our personalities in social media, and we have been doing it more and more in a digital manner; take for example the avatars we have been using for a long time. This year we are starting to see the transformation of these resources towards the experimentation of various techniques and media, such as illustration + photography.
7. Virtual reality. Just as it has been introduced in products and in our lives, virtual reality will permeate the design world. The 180-degree perspectives and the imitation of what we see through the VR glasses, such as information and analysis dialogues, are now part of the design trends for 2020.
