Communicating an environmental cause with real impact
Sargassum is not only an environmental problem; it is a challenge that threatens ecosystems, local economies and the quality of life in the Mexican Caribbean. The massive arrival of these seaweeds has seriously affected coastal habitats, biodiversity and tourism activity, generating a real urgency to find sustainable solutions. With the organization of the "Mexico-European Union Forum to turn sargassum into an opportunity", promoted by the European Union, the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment of Quintana Roo, CAF and The Seas We Love, the objective was clear: to position the forum as a space for change and international projection. Our challenge was to design a communication strategy capable of giving this effort visibility, credibility and generating awareness in society about this issue.
A narrative of opportunity in the face of challenge
From the beginning, we understood that in order to truly connect with audiences, we needed to build a narrative that spoke of solutions, not just problems. We drafted and designed a media alert inviting high-profile media to cover the forum, and we produced a press release that clearly explained the environmental, social and economic impact of sargassum, as well as the innovative approaches that were proposed to turn it into an opportunity.
We work on the strategic distribution of these materials, ensuring their arrival in the appropriate media. We were present at the forum to capture audiovisual content such as videos and photos that fed social networks and extended the reach of the conversation. In addition, we managed interviews with key media to amplify the voices of the main representatives of the project, including the Ambassador of the European Union in Mexico, thus strengthening coverage from an angle of leadership and international engagement.
From a local forum to an international conversation
The impact was overwhelming: we achieved more than 121 publications in the media, including outstanding coverage in Forbes, López-Dóriga, El Universal, El Economista and Milenio. More than 50 media outlets attended the forum in person. In addition, we managed key interviews in reference media such as WIRED and Agencia EFE, consolidating the positioning of the European Union and allied institutions as benchmarks in the search for sustainable solutions for the Mexican Caribbean.
The active participation of key media and the reach achieved laid the foundations to promote future collaborations between Mexico, the European Union and other actors interested in sustainable solutions.
